I normally wouldn’t post links to download pirated content, but the message of Julia Serano’s magnificent first book Whipping Girl: A Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity is so important for every woman (trans or cis) to read that I’m breaking my rule.

If you consider yourself a feminist, you have no excuse not to read this.

I’m with the OP, it’s kind of an essential read. Not the be-all-end-all of trans feminism, but certainly a starting point that many, many people (trans, cis, male, female, or otherwise) need to read. Definitely buy it, though, if you like it and can.

Julia Serano suggests you buy it at your local independent book store, and failing that, check Giovanni’s Room, Cody’s, Powells.com and Amazon.com.

ESSENTIAL READING (& one of my all-time favorite books!)

Ok, look, I understand that trans women are often in a situation where they cannot afford to buy books, as I am unemployed myself, but I cannot sit here and watch this happen without saying something, because I consider Julia Serano a friend, and she has expressed her anger that people are posting her book with the intent to distribute pirated copies.

Julia Serano is, may I remind you, also a trans woman, and a vital member of our community. Please think twice before you take her livelihood away from her, as well as damage the ability of the publisher of Whipping Girl to continue taking chances like the one they took when they decided to invest in the money it takes to publish this book, which may very possibly be the most important book ever written in the history of the trans community.

I have said my peace, because my conscience will not allow me to do otherwise. I will say no more.
